How To Play Outkast - Hey Ya

Posted on 05:07 by JKW van der Hut

One of the more popular ones, apparently, so I'll take my time for this one. It's not a lot, but I can imagine it must be difficult figuring out which fingers to use for notes.. The video should give you a good idea, and with the tabs below, this should be doable. Just like always; Practice, practice, practice.. If you're really a beginner at fingerstyle playing, try to get the basic down through a fingerstyle guitar tutorial on YouTube, and try to bring it into practice with this song. If you need some extra pointers, just ask, I'll be happy to shed some more light on it.

So, the chords.. I use G - C - C - D - E. All 4 seconds, except for the D which has 2 seconds. That might be confusing, just practice playing along with the lyrics. Then you want to combine the chords with the melody. To make it easier for you, let's try just the melody first.
Verse
e:--0-------------------------------------------|
B:----3-1-0---0-0h1-0-------0-0h1-0-------0-1-0-|
G:----------0---------0---0---------0---0-------|
D:----------------------2-------------2---------|

   My baby..

Chorus
e:--------0----------0----------------------|
B:--0-1-3------0-1-3---3-1-0---0------------|
G:--------------------------------1---------|
D:----------------------------------2-------|

The only trick left is to combine this with the chords. Get yourself up to speed by practicing some basic fingerpicking exercises, if it proves a little difficult. Let's start with the G - C - C:
G C C
e:--------0---------|---------------|---------------|
B:----------3-1-0---|-0-0h1-0-------|-0-0h1-0-------|
G:----------------0-|---------0---0-|---------0---0-|
D:------------------|-----------2---|-----------2---|
A:----2-------------|-3-------------|-3-------------|
E:-3----------------|---------------|---------------|

So you start with the bassnotes. Place your ringfinger on the 3rd of the lower E string and the middlefinger on the 2nd of the A string. Pick them and let the tone continue, so keep those fingers pressed down. This way the basstone will accompany the melody. As you keep the middle and ringfinger down, pick the melody. Use your pinky for the 3rd of the B string and your index for the 1st of the B string. You can use these fingers, while your middle and ringfinger keep in G position. Did you get that? Try it again and again, untill it starts to make sense...

Then continue to the C. Your middle and ringfinger stay in the same shape, but move down one step. So your middle goes from 2nd A string to 2nd D string, and your ringfinger goes from 3rd E string to 3rd A string. And behold..a C. Again your pinky and index are going to play the meldoy.. And keep forcing your middle and ringfinger down, to keep the basstone ringing. A good thing is, is that the second C part is the same as the first. Repetition is your friend!

So now comes the D - E part. I get some responses that it should be an Em. True, if it would be that acoustic cover you see on Youtube a lot. The original is an E, but you can play it any way you like. If you want an E, play the 1st of the G string and if you want an Em, play the G string loose, instead on the first fret. Ok, here it comes..when you switch from the last C to the D, just release all fingers and play the D part like this:
D E
e:----------|------------------------0-----|
B:-0----1---|-0--------------------0---0---|
G:---0----0-|---1-------1--------1-------0-|
D:-0--------|-----2---2--------2-----------|
A:----------|-------2--------2-------------|
E:----------|-0------------0---------------|

Just use the index for the 1st on the B string. Then comes the E chord and as you can see, its really just going up and down the chord. The trick is to do it fast...it only sounds correct if you play it fast. So that leaves just the chorus. Remember to play it like the verse, keep the bassnotes down with the middle and ringfinger, play the melody with the pinky and the indexfinger. Good luck!
G C C
e:----------------0-|------------------|---------------0-|
B:----------0-1-3---|----------1-------|---------0-1-3---|
G:-----0------------|------0-----0---0-|-----0-----------|
D:---0---0----------|----2---2-----2---|---2---2---------|
A:------------------|--3---------------|-3---------------|
E:-3----------------|------------------|-----------------|
D E
e:----------|------------------------0-----|
B:-0----1---|-0--------------------0---0---|
G:---0----0-|---1-------1--------1-------0-|
D:-0--------|-----2---2--------2-----------|
A:----------|-------2--------2-------------|
E:----------|-0------------0---------------|

Here's the video, though it differs a little from the tabs and tutorial.
