Lesson for Percy Sledge's When A Man...

I know, it's an amazing song and it doesn't lose its authenticity. Percy Sledge - When A Man Loves A Woman.. For some reason, the radio plays it at exactly the right moment, you end up listening to it on YouTube and looking for a tutorial. I'll be happy to try and teach you how I play the song. As you see and hear, with fingerpicking you an combine the chords with the singing part, the melody. Great to impress the love of your life with and melt her heart, but heavy for the fingers.. Take your time for it, make sure you have the basics of guitar fingerpicking down and if you still come across some unclarities, let me know and I'll try to explain better.

The basic chord progression I use is great. It's not mine, unfortunatly, and there are hundreds of songs are played with the complete progression, or at least a part of it. From Annie Lennox' 'Why' untill...well, 'When a Man Loves a Woman"... Here it is:
C C/b Am Am/G F G C G
e:--x--|--x--|--x--|--x--|--x--|--x--|--x--|--x--|
B:--1--|--1--|--1--|--1--|--1--|--0--|--1--|--0--|
G:--0--|--0--|--2--|--0--|--2--|--0--|--0--|--0--|
D:--2--|--0--|--2--|--2--|--3--|--0--|--2--|--0--|
A:--3--|--2--|--0--|--x--|--3--|--2--|--3--|--2--|
E:--x--|--x--|--x--|--3--|--1--|--3--|--x--|--3--|

This is one of the few old vids where you can see my righthand. For the melody, I let my fingers 'roll' over the strings to kinda fill up the voids. Start with the ring, then the middle and then the indexfinger...and do it really fast. It's a cool technique, if you want to really get into it, try to find some tutorials on tremolo for the guitar, which is a classical technique to pick the string continuously, very fast. I recommend it..it gives your guitarplaying a little extra dimension. Who knows, maybe in a year you'll play Recuerdos de la Alhambra like a pro. Be sure to send me a link though.. Anyway, what I want to say is I won't tab it like that, because it will get way too crowded with numbers. I'll only put down the right high notes in combination with the right bassnotes. It's all up to you to make it sound fuller, once you've got the basics down. Ok sorry, on with the melody. Have a look:
C C/B
e:-5--5--|-5--3----3--0-|-3--5----------|
B:-------|--------------|---------0---0-|
G:-------|-0------------|-----------0---|
D:-------|-2------------|-0-------------|
A:-------|-3------------|-2-------------|
E:-------|--------------|---------------|

  When a Ma-an loves a wo-man

Yeah that's cool huh, when you can hear those opening notes.. If the fingerpicking proves a little difficult, try to simply strum the chords and fingerpositions. first train the left hand, then the right hand. And when you decide to start the fingerpicking, focus on just the A string with the thumb, and the e and B string with the index finger. As such:

e:-5-5-5--3--3--0--3--5--|
A:-----3-----------2-----|

Keep doing that for the other parts as well.. When that goes well, fill it up by simply using more fingers, brush some strings with the thumb, anything to create a fuller sound. When you have the basic chords and fingerpicking down, you'll feel so much more comfortable to experiment. Just accept that playing the tabs, won't make it sound like the video yet.. Ok, on with the show, second part:

Am Am/G F
e:--------0---------|-----------------|----0----------|
B:-1--1-----3-1-0---|-3--1--3---------|------3-1-0----|
G:-2--2-----------0-|---------0-0---0-|-2----------0--|
D:-2----------------|-------------2---|-3-------------|
A:-0----------------|-----------------|-3-------------|
E:------------------|-3---------------|-1-------------|

How To Play Outkast - Hey Ya

One of the more popular ones, apparently, so I'll take my time for this one. It's not a lot, but I can imagine it must be difficult figuring out which fingers to use for notes.. The video should give you a good idea, and with the tabs below, this should be doable. Just like always; Practice, practice, practice.. If you're really a beginner at fingerstyle playing, try to get the basic down through a fingerstyle guitar tutorial on YouTube, and try to bring it into practice with this song. If you need some extra pointers, just ask, I'll be happy to shed some more light on it.

So, the chords.. I use G - C - C - D - E. All 4 seconds, except for the D which has 2 seconds. That might be confusing, just practice playing along with the lyrics. Then you want to combine the chords with the melody. To make it easier for you, let's try just the melody first.
Verse
e:--0-------------------------------------------|
B:----3-1-0---0-0h1-0-------0-0h1-0-------0-1-0-|
G:----------0---------0---0---------0---0-------|
D:----------------------2-------------2---------|

   My baby..

Chorus
e:--------0----------0----------------------|
B:--0-1-3------0-1-3---3-1-0---0------------|
G:--------------------------------1---------|
D:----------------------------------2-------|

The only trick left is to combine this with the chords. Get yourself up to speed by practicing some basic fingerpicking exercises, if it proves a little difficult. Let's start with the G - C - C:
G C C
e:--------0---------|---------------|---------------|
B:----------3-1-0---|-0-0h1-0-------|-0-0h1-0-------|
G:----------------0-|---------0---0-|---------0---0-|
D:------------------|-----------2---|-----------2---|
A:----2-------------|-3-------------|-3-------------|
E:-3----------------|---------------|---------------|

So you start with the bassnotes. Place your ringfinger on the 3rd of the lower E string and the middlefinger on the 2nd of the A string. Pick them and let the tone continue, so keep those fingers pressed down. This way the basstone will accompany the melody. As you keep the middle and ringfinger down, pick the melody. Use your pinky for the 3rd of the B string and your index for the 1st of the B string. You can use these fingers, while your middle and ringfinger keep in G position. Did you get that? Try it again and again, untill it starts to make sense...

Then continue to the C. Your middle and ringfinger stay in the same shape, but move down one step. So your middle goes from 2nd A string to 2nd D string, and your ringfinger goes from 3rd E string to 3rd A string. And behold..a C. Again your pinky and index are going to play the meldoy.. And keep forcing your middle and ringfinger down, to keep the basstone ringing. A good thing is, is that the second C part is the same as the first. Repetition is your friend!

So now comes the D - E part. I get some responses that it should be an Em. True, if it would be that acoustic cover you see on Youtube a lot. The original is an E, but you can play it any way you like. If you want an E, play the 1st of the G string and if you want an Em, play the G string loose, instead on the first fret. Ok, here it comes..when you switch from the last C to the D, just release all fingers and play the D part like this:
D E
e:----------|------------------------0-----|
B:-0----1---|-0--------------------0---0---|
G:---0----0-|---1-------1--------1-------0-|
D:-0--------|-----2---2--------2-----------|
A:----------|-------2--------2-------------|
E:----------|-0------------0---------------|

Just use the index for the 1st on the B string. Then comes the E chord and as you can see, its really just going up and down the chord. The trick is to do it fast...it only sounds correct if you play it fast. So that leaves just the chorus. Remember to play it like the verse, keep the bassnotes down with the middle and ringfinger, play the melody with the pinky and the indexfinger. Good luck!
G C C
e:----------------0-|------------------|---------------0-|
B:----------0-1-3---|----------1-------|---------0-1-3---|
G:-----0------------|------0-----0---0-|-----0-----------|
D:---0---0----------|----2---2-----2---|---2---2---------|
A:------------------|--3---------------|-3---------------|
E:-3----------------|------------------|-----------------|
D E
e:----------|------------------------0-----|
B:-0----1---|-0--------------------0---0---|
G:---0----0-|---1-------1--------1-------0-|
D:-0--------|-----2---2--------2-----------|
A:----------|-------2--------2-------------|
E:----------|-0------------0---------------|

Here's the video, though it differs a little from the tabs and tutorial.

Outkast / Vines - Ms. Jackson

Ok, this shouldn't cause you too much trouble. The timing is something you'd have to practice, and I'll transcribe the chords as clear as possible. Well, the first version is simply G - A - Bm - A
G
I'm sorry Ms. Jackson (oh)
         A
I am for re-al

Bm
Never meant to make your daughter cry

A
I apologize a trillion times

So, let's try the version of the Vines. Honestly, I have no idea what the accurate names of the chords are. They're based on C, D and Em, so I'll just refer to them as such. Here they are:
   C D Em
e:-3-| pinky |-5-| pinky |-7-| pinky
B:-1-| index |-3-| index |-0-|
G:-0-| |-0-| |-0-|
D:-2-| middle |-4-| middle |-5-| index
A:-3-| ring |-5-| ring |-7-| ring
E:-X-| |-X-| |-0-|

Ok, and then play these chords in the same way as the previous chords:

C
I'm sorry Ms. Jackson (oh)
         D
I am for re-al

Em
Never meant to make your daughter cry

D
I apologize a trillion times

To slap and create the snare sound, you simply use your thumb to hit the strings. It's something you have to practice over and over again.. Hope it worked out for you and enjoy. Want to try some more advanced Outkast? Try the Hey Ya tutorial.

Lady Gaga - Pokerface Guitar Lesson

I know I'm late with this one, but you wouldn't believe the amount of requests I got for this one. Well, lately I have some more time and I thought I'd give it a try. A simple, but romantic interpretation of Lady Gaga's Pokerface.

First, I've put the song in a ballad form...the original is quite monotone on one, acoustic guitar. I saw many tabs, different chords, but I prefer the Em - C - G - D combination. And then just play those chords all throughout the song. Then I practiced the infamous intro, which is a lot of fun to play. Give it a try:

e:-----------------|-----------------|
B:-----------------|-----------------|
G:-2-2-------------|-2-2-----0-0-----|
D:---------2-2-----|-----3-----------|
A:-----0-0-----0-0-|-------3---------|
E:-----------------|-------------3-3-|
In this form it's easy to combine with the open chords that follow the intro. So let's try play some chords in combination with the melody. Remember to fingerpick, bass strings with the thumb, high strings with the fingers.

Em C
e:-------------------|-----------------|
B:---0------0--------|--1---------1----|
G:------0------0---0-|----0----0-------|
D:--------2------2---|------2----------|
A:----------2--------|--3--------------|
E:-0-----------------|-----------------|

I wanna h..they do in Texas Plays

Fold em' let em' hit me raise it baby stay with me (I love it)
Luck and intuition play the cards with Spades to start
And after he's been hooked I'll play the one that's on his heart

Em C
e:-----------------|-------------------|
B:-----------------|-------------------|
G:-----4(b)--2--0--|-----4(b)--2-4-2-0-|
D:-2(v)------------|-2(v)--------------|
A:-----------------|-3-----------------|
E:-0---------------|-------------------|

   Oh, oh, oh,oh, ohh,ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh
G D
e:-------------------|-------------------|
B:---0---0-----0-----|------3------------|
G:---0---0--0--0----2|--2-------2---2-2--|
D:-------------------|--0----------------|
A:-------------------|-------------------|
E:-3-----------------|-------------------|

Ill get him hot, show him what I've got

And again, this is probably the easiest riff..

Em C
e:-----------------|-------------------|
B:-----------------|-------------------|
G:-----4(b)--2--0--|-----4(b)--2-4-2-0-|
D:-2(v)------------|-2(v)--------------|
A:-----------------|-3-----------------|
E:-0---------------|-------------------|

   Oh, oh, oh,oh, ohh,ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh

Oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh-oh,
I'll get him hot, show him what I've got

   Em C
e:-------3-----2--------3----2------|-------3--2--3---2------|
B:------------------3-------------3-|---------------------3--|
G:----0-----------------------------|---0--------------------|
D:---2------------------------------|--2---------------------|
A:--2-------------------------------|-3----------------------|
E:-0--------------------------------|------------------------|

Can't read my, Can't read my No he can't read my

  G D
e:----------------------|---------------------------|
B:-0------3--3----------|-3-------------------------|
G:----0-----------0---0-|-2-----2---0---2----4--2-0-|
D:---0--------------0---|-0-------------------------|
A:--2-------------------|---------------------------|
E:-3--------------------|---------------------------|

po - ker face (She's got to love no body)

And simply repeat... try to fill the voids by strumming some more strings, but make sure you can play it like above first.
